Description
The five-floor basalt quarry is located on the slope of the Hlídka hill, which is situated above the valley of the Ploučnice River. It is easily accessible via a short turn from road No. 262 between Soutěsky and Jedlka. Basalt has a form of irregular pentagon-shaped columns that were created by the gradual cooling of subsurface effusion. The stone is mined by mechanical breaking off, i.e. without the use of explosives. The column diameter reaches several decimetres, usually 20-50 cm. Stone is processed into gross and fine stonework products (cutting, drilling) near the quarry. It is typically used for the production of garden architecture elements (solitaires, lamps, fountains, etc), facings and pavements, or as building stone.
