Stones, sandpits and limestone quarries in the Czech Republic

This small quarry is situated in the village of Benátky near Litomyšl. The eastern side of the quarry runs alongside the main road that connects the villages. The quarry is on a slope, from which theopoka is broken off by an excavator. In the higher parts of the quarry the stone is mostly quarried in smaller blocks, while blocks of up to 1.2 m in size can be quarried from the lower tiers. The opoka is manually cut and chipped in the quarry (to make masonry stone, tiles, paving, etc.). The opoka is cut using a circular saw in the nearby plant in Cerekvice nad Loučnou.
