Stones, sandpits and limestone quarries in the Czech Republic

This extensive sand quarry lies in the forest, some 5.5 km to the south of Bzenec, between the Morava River and the railway line from Hodonín to Staré Město. It is accessible along the access route leading southwest from highway No. 426. In the sand quarry the raw material is quarried from a face roughly 14 m high and approx. 1 km long using electric excavators. The quarried raw material is transported by conveyor belt to the treatment plant some 2 km away. The sand is then washed and sorted on the floating and sedimentation rate principle. If needed, the sand may also be transported by conveyor belt to the railway line and loaded into wagons. The quarry produces washed sand, sorted to 0-2 and 2-4 mm fractions, as well as dredged sand, i.e. sand that is not washed or sorted. Washed sand of 0-4 mm fractions was taken for the tests.
