Stones, sandpits and limestone quarries in the Czech Republic

This face quarry is situated on a slope on the south-western edge of the Prague district of Přední Kopanina. It was an important source of so-called golden opoka, used to build many of Prague’s historical monuments. The quarry has a great diversity of stone. The rock is heavily weathered in the top tiers of the quarry, while the quality of the stone improves greatly lower down, enabling relatively large blocks of opoka to be quarried. The stone was bored and then broken up using wedges. The quarry is presently closed down.
