Despite being an igneous rock, macroscopically it is similar to porphyritic sandstone from Malé Žernoseky. It is usually irregularly coloured to different shades of ochre or brownish-red (see Figures 1 to 3); a light grey variant depicted in Figure 4 occurs only locally. Fracture surfaces may be dark grey or even black (see Figure 5).
